Elian looked up at the dark sky through the gnarled branches overhead and sighed. Though he and Rhielle had starlight to guide their way, the night was too cold to idle for long. They would need to find a place to stay or keep moving.

His horse, Tuck, grunted and moved back, spooked by the howls of coyotes in the distance.

“Alright, boy.” Elian patted him.

Their search had led them to all the right places, but they were always a step behind.

The rustle of leaves tore through the air as Rhielle marched toward him through the trees.

“You’ve been gone a long time,” Elian said.

“I needed to take a call of nature while I was out,” she replied.

Elian turned his head and smiled. He cleared his throat and said, “They aren’t down this way. I have a feeling we’ll need to back track.”

“The thief said they were following the river all the way down to the coast.”

“And what makes you think he wouldn’t lie for them?”

Rhielle mounted Giddy and patted her. “From what the man said, he hardly knew them a day. He had no reason to risk lying for them to save his own hide.”

Elian urged Tuck forward and rode with Rhielle along the path. They had followed the river for days, and had found signs that Amias was around, but after getting turned around and lost, they were set back by a day and a half. Eventually, their search led them out of the forest to the far west, nearly to the ocean’s shoreline. For the past day, they rode east along the treeline.

They had to have emerged from the forest at some point. There are a number of towns they could have come to if they went south.

The bitter cold made Elian’s legs ache. This wild goose chase was leading them all over Milarc, and he was growing frustrated. He scratched the back of his throbbing head and glanced over at the rocky hills of Torke’s region to their right. In the distance, a roadside inn sat, looking cozy with its windows glowing orange and smoke pluming from the chimneys.

“I know where we are,” Elian told Rhielle. “Berry Farms is about ten or so miles east of here.”

“Think he’ll be there?” Rhielle asked.

“I don’t know. Lots of tourists like to visit the wineries there. Amias more than likely would avoid it.” He looked over at her. “You tired?”

Rhielle rolled her head back and looked at him with sleepy eyes. “Understatement.”

Elian smiled and looked down. “We can rest at the inn.”

It was past the midnight hour when they made it to the inn, and Elian hoped he didn’t have to drag the innkeeper out of bed to rent a room. They led their horses into the stable, where a stablehand took the animals and put them up for the night.

“Should I be getting used to this much travel?” Rhielle asked as they walked along the cobblestone path.

“Travel, yes,” Elian said. “This much? No. When you’re an official Wielder, you’ll only be visiting the children you’re assigned to.
